In this paper I examine what kind of agents must we be and what kind of agential powers do we need in order to access (i) a minimally decent life? (ii) a good life? I present a standard picture of planning agency and the diachronic goods and show how this picture reflects and reinforces social privilege. I draw a distinction between proactive and reactive agency. Proactive agency requires social and material resources unavailable to those living in poverty in neoliberal societies. Poverty forces people into reactive forms of agency and self-control. They are then stigmatised for their failure to engage in long term planning and proactive forms of control.
